What Is a CBCT Scan and How Is It Used in Dentistry?

In this video, Dr. Rose Magno explains how CBCT scans provide detailed 3D imaging for precise implant planning and other treatments.

CBCT X-rays are also known as 3D X-rays because they show us different dimensions of your teeth, jaw, and surrounding structures. A CBCT scan provides a three-dimensional view that allows us to see the length, width, and other important details of your teeth, implants, and jaw. This is a more advanced imaging technique compared to traditional X-rays, such as panoramic (pan) or periapical (PA) X-rays, which don’t offer the same level of detail.

In fact, a 3D CBCT scan is now considered essential for planning dental implants. We cannot proceed with implant placement without it because it provides a detailed and accurate view of the bone and surrounding structures. It’s pretty much mandatory that we do 3D X-rays to determine whether implants are possible for you.

For example, the scan presented in this video shows us exactly where an implant should be placed, ensuring that it aligns properly within the bone. In the scan, you can see the implant positioned correctly between the bone and surrounding structures, with enough length to support the restoration. The scan also gives us the ability to assess angles and make precise decisions for the best outcome.

We use CBCT scans throughout the procedure, from start to finish, to make sure the implants are placed properly in your mouth and that we’ve engaged enough bone to make the implant stable. The CBCT scan ensures that implant placement is done safely and effectively, giving us the information needed to deliver optimal results.
