A dental implant is a titanium screw that Dr. Rose Magno inserts into your jawbone to replace missing teeth. The implant—acting as the root of the missing tooth—fuses with your jawbone in a process known as osseointegration.
You may consider dental implants if you have one or more missing teeth, as they support artificial crowns, bridges, or dentures!
However, traditional dental implants are only an option for people with enough bone to secure the implant. Otherwise, you may need a bone graft. Fortunately, conventional dental implants aren’t the only option anymore. What Are Traditional Dental Implants?
Traditional dental implants have a diameter ranging between 3.25-6 millimeters. They consist of three pieces: the screwlike base, the abutment, and the screw. The base, also known as a post or fixture, is inserted into your jawbone. The abutment is the connector that attaches to the post and sticks out above the gum line, anchoring the restoration to the jaw. Your crown, bridge, or denture is then secured on top of the implant to restore your smile.
The implant post is made of titanium, a strong metal used in medical procedures for decades. Dental lab technicians typically use porcelain or zirconia for the restorations, which are durable materials built to last!
Unfortunately, getting traditional implants can take up to a year from start to finish. Some of that time is for healing and recovery, as it’s an invasive procedure with multiple surgeries over several months. Depending on your needs, you may require tooth extraction and/or bone grafting. Once the bone is readied, an incision must be made in the gums to create a flap that uncovers the jawbone underneath. Then, a series of drills increasing in size are used to create a hole large enough for the implant post to fit. In between each component’s placement, a recovery period is required to allow for osseointegration and healing. Finally, after a few months, your implant may be stable enough to support a restoration.

What Are Mini Dental Implants?
Mini dental implants are smaller than traditional implants—less than 3 millimeters in diameter. They are also made of titanium and consist of a one-piece screw with a ball-shaped end that protrudes from the jawbone.
Before a mini dental implant procedure, you’ll schedule an initial consultation and assessment. At this appointment, Dr. Magno takes a cone beam CT scan (CBCT), which provides a three-dimensional view of your mouth and jaw. If you’re a good candidate for mini implants, we’ll schedule or begin your procedure.
At your next appointment, Dr. Magno will administer local anesthesia to numb the area where she will place the implant. There is often no need for sedation as the process is very quick and minimally invasive! Dr. Magno will first make a small pilot hole through the gum tissue and jawbone. Then, she will carefully insert the implant into the bone. Thanks to its unique features, a mini implant is instantly stable enough to support a temporary restoration.
You will wear this restoration for a few weeks. During this time, the implant will integrate with the bone, and the dental lab will fabricate your custom prosthetic. Once your final restoration arrives, Dr. Magno will remove the temporary one and place your custom-made replacement! After she places the restoration, you are ready to show off your beautiful new smile.
