What Is a Frenectomy?

In this video, Dr. Rose Magno explains how laser frenectomies address tongue-tie quickly and effectively, improving speech and tongue mobility with minimal downtime. Contact our Emeryville office, serving San Francisco, East Bay, and Oakland, to schedule a consultation and learn more.

A tongue-tie, also known as a short lingual attachment, occurs when the ligament under the tongue is too short, limiting movement. This condition can make it difficult to pronounce certain sounds, such as “T,” “L,” “S,” “W,” and “TH.” While some people with tongue-tie adapt over time, it can still cause speech difficulties.

I had a patient, a speech therapist, who spoke quite well despite having a short lingual attachment. She shared that it took her years of practice to compensate. I explained that with a simple procedure, I could fix it in just 5-10 minutes using a laser. The procedure involves carefully snipping the extra ligament under the tongue, and it is quick and straightforward.

The recovery time is minimal—most patients report being able to eat and continue normal activities on the same day, similar to the healing time for a small cut on the lip. The procedure is fast, effective, and requires no significant downtime, making it an easy solution to improve speech and tongue mobility.
